My guess is that many grandmasters do not "pay 5000 Dollar or more for" seconds.

OK only the top, but its the kind of atitude that gets most to become gm. Dont think many live that easy life of beer.

Ofc if you semi retired and only play some league games in the US or Something, than maybe you can do that.

But i have a hard time believing that many active gms who are still striving live that way.

Genius is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent transpiration.

A few years ago, I saw a reference to about 1500 grandmasters. It doesn't seem likely that an accurate picture is created by thinking in terms of the attitudes of the "semi retired" and "the top". With all those GMs, I would guess that there are a broad range of attitudes.

If there are somewhere around 1500 grandmasters, that means that a lot of them are nowhere near the top.

But if they are striving to get better and care for chess i dont think they will spend most time in the pub.

Somewhere around 1500 grandmasters.

But how many million play chess, in Japan 80 or 40 million play shogi, i forgot the number.

So they are basically like athlets, cant imagine they are smoking all day unless they given up on striving.
