Burrower is indeed on[to] something here. As far as I’m aware, my comment (about playing naked) was the only joke in this thread. (Or was it a joke?)

I, like 99% of the chess community here, would just choose to quit using lichess I was required to set up surveillance in my home in order to play chess... Cheating is obviously terrible, but I would gladly take cheaters in lichess over being monitored in my home. I donate to lichess, but it isn't required. I would never be surveiled in my own home in order to play on a FREE chess app. It's absurd. I also hope you're just trolling.

@MiKeoXmall Oh no, then you won't like the camera @Burrower and I put in your room yesterday...

@MiKeoXmall Oh no, then you won't like the camera @Burrower and I put in your room yesterday...

@MiKeoXmall Your points are received and understood. Respectfully, I alleviated your concerns in a number of ways:

  • "one of my proposals was that users are obligated to buy cameras for $10 in order to be able to play rated games (anyone can play casual)" #17. Therefore, you would still be able to use the app for free to play unrated games if you are unhappy with surveillance.

  • "We could also put constraints on the initial investment, such as only sending cameras to users who have previously been marked for cheating or artificially changing their ratings. Since offending predicts re-offending ... " #13. Therefore, we could limit the roll out of surveillance cameras to the subset of users with a high likelihood of re-offence at the start, since this limited investment would created the greatest net positive for all users.

  • "...moderator and dev workload would also decrease quickly ... they can spend more time improving lichess rather than undertaking arduous policing work ... It benefits everyone ... Join me in petitioning for surveillance cameras with AI analysis to be introduced." #13. As you can see, I proposed a petition or vote. I support democratic process, even though I personally think it should be implemented immediately since it can be justified purely from an investment standpoint.

You are welcome to just play casual games, or to vote against the introduction of cameras of course. There is no harm in making suggestions and calling for petitions, just as there is no harm in you disagreeing with proposals.

Regardless of what you think, let us agree that both of us have intentions to make the lichess playing experience more cheat-free and enjoyable, as well decreasing the workload for users, mods and devs who deal with these issues on a daily basis. We share the same positive intentions here, we just have different visions for how these goals should be best actualized. It's also common for good ideas to be resisted at the beginning.

Let me also remind you not to deny the world we currently live in. Go to buy some rice from the shop and you are likely to be captured on 100 cameras. Use an app on your phone and all your data is probably saved and sold to advertisers in various ways. Use a site like this and all of the messages you have ever sent are logged and readable. We live in an age where all information about us is stored in remote databases for eternity. With my proposal, we have transparency about exactly how this information will be used and who it will viewed by. One of the often unstated benefits of so much information is that it also allows us to prove our innocence. For instance, if I am falsely accused of cheating, I can prove definitively that it is not the case with the 1 hour of surveillance footage. Information protects people.

Warm regards, Burrower

@Burrower I play alot while on the toilet. I'd be happy to set up a nice toilet cam for everyone, but I'm pretty sure you'll be scarred for life. Your eyes wouldn't work for chess anymore...

@MiKeoXmall This is an edge case, but let me address your concerns anyway:

  • "It would be accessible only to AI data analysis and lichess moderators" #13. So, certainly not "everyone".

Long term, I see most of the data analysis and detection being handled by AI, and AI certainly doesn't care whether you are on the toilet or not. Short term, moderators would only view the footage after there is reasonable justification to so, meaning there is at least 1 strong report or automated threshold detection (e.g. switching windows every move with high stockfish move congruence), and only at the relevant time stamp. The way moderators action these reports will also feed into AI learning cases that assists it in making these decisions without human support in future.

Moderators certainly won't be interested in your toilet habits. They're here to keep the site enjoyable and safe. Besides, they will have thousands of reports to get through, they don't have time to pay special attention to exactly what you are doing. If anything happened (such as publicising confidential footage), then powers would be revoked. Rest easy and trust that others have good intentions my friend. If this is your only concern and I have alleviated it, then we are on the same side now. Hope you have a great day.
