Agreed. On top of that most ICCF (engines allowed) correspondence players (myself included) just use stockfish as it's clearly the best and free. It just makes no sense to pay money for a downgrade.
I wish that companies would focus on creating better interfaces and database software rather than the already dead engine market (since the best ones are free anyways). Engines are easy to get free but for free database software you have to get something like SCID which isn't great, and for good software you have to pay $150 for chessbase or something.

All credit to team stockfish for what they do, it's amazing! I'm sort of in the middle on this conflict though, because although I find it immoral to sell a rebranded free product, it's not illegal.
THAT BEING SAID AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, I find the stupidest part is that people actually buy things like Houdini or Fat Fritz because you can get what they are selling for free.......

For those stuck on the price chessbase was selling stockfish. Selling stockfish for $50+ isn't and wasn't the issue, chessbase were within their rights to sell it. Chessbase can also rename it to Fat Fritz or houdini or whatever. The issue is chessbase are allegedly redistributing stockfish without providing the source code.
Linus, the creator and still lead of linux encourages people to make money off it. Many people have made literally billions of dollars with linux and Linus is very happy for them. He makes a comfortable living as a very senior software developer but he's not a billionaire, not even close, and he's not bothered by that at all. He's comfortable, happy, proud, etc.

Actuality if CB are breaching the Stockfish licensing agreement than it is illegal. The fact that SF is "free" isn't relevant, it's intellectual property that belongs to its creators and there are terms and conditions as to its use.
