Invisible Pieces: Women in Chess

mmm hmmmm, interesting article. I really don't know whether women are at some kind of "biological disadvantage" when it comes to chess. However, the fact is that chess is simply not something that women are typically interested in doing. I don't care if women want to play chess, lol. What bothers is cases when there are accusations of sexism, when women don't even want to play this game. I don't care who is the superior sex. If you can become a chess champion, go ahead. If you can't, you can't. And as the article mentioned, this is a game where physical size and strength don't give any advantage to one sex. So women, either admit that you don't like chess, or that they aren't chess champions. If some woman becomes chess champion, I don't care. But they aren't doing it, soooo.... what do you want from me?

Beautiful article and well written! Do continue posting such stuff lichess. I am a boy and if I have ever acted in such a way to any female I do apologise with full heart (not that I remember of such an instance but I do require to say it). Also to all the guys here mad at this article, you just proved yourself to be the like the evil type of men mentioned in the article.

Thanks Lichess!!

PS: Can lichess please pin this thread like how this thread was https://lichess.org/forum/general-chess-discussion/lichess-has-an-instagram-account ?

@margaritaor The countries closer to this concept of "absolute equity" are the nordic ones, Sweden for example. And they would have already reached this concept, if the absolute existed, because there will be always bad people. If there woman can't be good in chess, is because they aren't interested on it. Feminism has only one simple explanation for everything and that is that women weren't opressed by the society. that doesn't leaves space to think about small details that might change everyting. can there be anything else, I mean, I don't know anything abot this topic, I am new to chess, but if an article says the things the same way that I see things in the world it can't be wrong, can it?

Wow, this author is smarter than Fisher. She thought of things even a chess world champion didn’t think about !

Talking to chess playing ladies you will learn what pricks 50% of the male competition turn out to be. I spoke with lots of them - unbelievable, how many of my male mates behave without supervision.

50% of the male competition? Wow, i didn’t think it was that much. Can you show us the source of theses stats to prove discrimination to this forum once and for all?

I've read a lot of articles on this subject, but this one is the best! Convincing in its evidence and logic but still with a personal touch. Kudos to the author.

Very courageous article. Congrats to the author for writing it and sorry for all the suffering you endure, as chess should be a source of joy for everybody.

I'll try and be more alert when my gender stereotypes kick in.

Mi ingles no es muy bueno, hare un intento de traduccion: Chess and gender: Thank you for putting into words something everyday that has to stop happening. I absolutely share the arguments presented here, in the first person.Sexism is so naturalized. You have to review sexist practices. Men have to stop being complicit in these practices and accompany, and make complaints, if they witness these situations. You have to question the very privileges that this society grants them

#224 @notnotnotCarlsen "The countries closer to this concept of "absolute equity" are the nordic ones, Sweden for example."

In May 2020, I gathered some data on the FIDE-rating list, and I looked at the number of FIDE-rated female players as a percentage of the total number of FIDE-rated players a country had.

Using that rating list, for countries with more than 500 FIDE-rated players, the bottom four countries had 4.02%, 3.61%, 3.23% and 1.77% female players with FIDE ratings. They were ... Finland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Iceland were 6th bottom. Faroe Islands didn't have any female players at all, but they are quite small so didn't make the 500-player qualification. So the countries "closer to this concept of absolute equality" by your reckoning, seem to be the bottom of the list in terms of number of women playing over-the-board chess.
