In the context I am thinking of, a "player": is someone who plays "mind games", or who manipulates others for his own gain. Perhaps it's a bit of a stretch in Kramnik's case, but I see that he is making a lot of unhappy noise.

It was an off the cuff remark, I didn't give it much thought.
