2025 Atomic World Championship Announcement

On the other hand it's all up to the organizer @HowlinD , regarding how much time and eneryge they're willing to invest. More players means more effort.

I'm fine with including a few more players. Keep in mind that in previous AWCs, 1700 to 1800 players only represent a couple players at most. Overall, it has few consequences, and isn't worth discussing for too long. It's all fine.

If you have the skill, lichess provides plenty of tournaments to prove it and get rating. The entry barrier could be as high as 2200+ to be fair, without risking to exclude anyone with chances to win.

I don't disagree that 1800 is a low requirement for AWC entry, but 2200 is definitely too high. Natso****, the current AWC Champion, was rated 2164 in July of 2024.

Thank you HowlinD for organizing. Apart from playing in the AWC for the first time, I would also be interested in joining the cheat-detecting group, if one is made. I am somewhat experienced with finding hackers, up to you to judge.

That's not entirely correct. Natso was 2164. Natso**** however is always way higher. It's a common confusion to mix those two.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind for future editions. For this year, it's already decided, and final, that there won't be a panel.

There wont be a cheat detection group. Look at this thread here or at the announcement itself

As a more active <2000 (although I peaked at 2010), I would personally say excluding <2000s just gives the AWC a bad reputation, an “elitist only” competition, only allowing for a select # of players. As well as spreading AWC, it would be good to have a 1800-Ish threshold because it’s reachable, inviting, and still allows for some excitement with upsets. Ik scheduling can be tricky, but it’s not just 1800s who may not be as good at scheduling. AWC final 2017 final is a prime example (I won’t go into it here but there’s a forum with what happened).
And by round 3 it’ll robs only be >200s anyway.
