Should the Sound of Check be Removed in Bullet?

I think that in Bullet games the "Da Da" sound of a Check should be removed.

Time is such a factor in Bullet games and when the computer makes the "Da Da" sound it keys the player to click on the king.

But over the board there is no notice that your king is in check (usually it's not required to announce "check"), you have to be aware that your king is in check.

So, with it staying the way it is, the player who gets checked has a slight advantage because once you've played enough you become conditioned to hear that noise and immediately move the king like Pavlov's dogs salivating for their grub.

Good thing it's not otb.
Just because something is this way IRL doesn't mean we can't improve upon it. This way the game actually comes down to your chess skills and not whether you can see if you kings in check all the time.

Seeing if your king is in check, including being aware when your king could become in check, is a chess skill though.

I mean I still love all the chess games here.

It’s not really a complaint, I just wanted to see if anyone else noticed that when the sound comes it advantages the person getting checked rather than the person with the initiative.

But it seems like most people like the sound.

@Catanese88 Ok. I have posted the solution to the problem here: bit.ly/3emXT3C
:)

The check sound doesn't really sound that odd, especially the way you put it "Pavlov's dogs salivating for their grub"... Anyways, I play without sound, so it's normally not a problem for me. Maybe you should try that too. Seriously, it doesn't take too long to get used to.

Just switch off the sound. Chess is played in silence, no bells or whistles.

@SavageAntarctican

But I can’t switch off the sound on the opponent’s side.

Part of the issue is I don’t want my opponent being put on notice that they are in check by the game, I also want them to have to be aware of the board.

@Catanese88 but the whole point of check is so they are made aware... hence why you say "check" if playing OTB. Check is a forcing move, meaning they have to either block/take the piece giving check, or move the king.

EDIT: well after a Google search, it sounds like you don't have to say it in tournaments. And in tournaments if you put them in check and they make an illegal move, they lose the game. So I'm assuming you want the same behaviour on lichess?

If that's the case, and you win because they made an illegal move as they didn't realise they were in check – in Bullet, of all things – I think that's a wee bit unsporting. Hoping I'm wrong about your intentions :-)

@Schtaeve Technically in OTB, I've heard that you can capture the king and not say check if your opponent doesn't notice the check in bullet games
