Should one must travel with a pocket chess set?

When I have my mobile phone with me, I can be disturbed by any fool in the world, even when they are 12 time zones away. But when I have my pocket chess set out, the only people who dare disturb me are the genuinely curious. For them, I have time.
Sometimes less is more.

I'm pretty sure I still have one of those shown on the left somewhere.

Well! It's already there in the smartphones. But again, depends on how much do you love playing chess. An avid lover will surely carry one.

Carrying a pocket chess set is a personal choice, but it can be very useful. It allows you to study positions, solve puzzles, or play casual games during travel downtime. If you are serious about practicing and analyzing away from a screen, it's highly recommended. For most casual travel, a chess app on your phone is a more convenient and space-efficient alternative.

I think a pocket chess set is a romantic idea... , <snip> xxx

Yes, it's a good way to meet women. "oh, will you teach me how to play chess?" I carry a pocket set at all times. I am well known in my neighborhood as the guy who beats everybody (except visiting candidate masters from Russia who are here (Toronto) working on their doctoral thesis). It's a great way to meet people, of all kinds. Here's how it goes. Someone walks nearby and eyes the set with interest. I ask "do you play?". More often than not the answer comes back... "I'm not that good". And I always say "that doesn't matter to me, it's just for fun". Or I will take my queen off the board and start with my a-pawn on the third rank, ala Nimzowitsch. Slap a couple of dollars down. They all sit down to play, walk away with a smile, and usually come back for more. Things come my way without asking.

People don't mind being beat, they are just afraid that they will be wasting our time. Not my time!
