It's a good thing there weren't human loses. I can live without that feature until it is restored

Sorry to hear about the fire, but glad to hear that Lichess is not hurt to badly.

Could this have been the reason why Lichess server was down 2 days ago when many of us lost games due to a timeout?

Maybe it is just a coincidence... But I find it suspicious that this is happening 2 days later and it was again in the morning at around 2am when the server was down.

All data centers are vulnerable to fire hazard. They are huge consumers of electricity so there is potential for overheating. Oil cooled transformers can overheat and catch fire. Cables can burn. Due to vibrations some connections may become loose and the higher resistance may cause overheating and fire. Short circuits may occur for many reasons.
Halon is now prohibited, but there are other fire surpressants. Key is to detect a fire early and to contain the fire so it cannot spread.
