I feel sorry for the pawn - even though the pawn has a 50/50 chance of being a male, 97% of the time, people assume the pawn's gender is a female by promoting to a queen. Either that or the pawn has metamorphosis powers that only occur at certain parts of the game...

Knights.

Forget all that talk about “L-shaped” moves. The essential thing about knights is that they alternate which color square they’re attacking each turn. So if your knight is currently on a dark square, he’s attacking light squares — and vice versa. Until he moves, when it inverts again. So he’s like a bishop once removed; one that alternates which color square it’s on each turn!

Also, no other piece can fork in quite the same way. (They can fork — just not with the attacked pieces so far apart!)

This complicates knights. Despite pawns having the option of moving one or two squares on their first turn, capturing en passant, queening, only attacking diagonally, being able to push past instead of capturing, etc. (?), the case could be made that knights are the most complicated, and potentially confusing piece, ipso facto, by default. It’s that alternating-color property which makes them so remarkable; no other piece is so inherently complex. Pawns are variable on their first & last turns, sure, but knights are complicated every turn. Every other piece is comparatively easy to understand.
