Accomplished Bangladeshi GM Ziaur Rahman Dies Mid-Game

The death of GM Ziaur Rahman is not becouse of a vacination

The death of GM Ziaur Rahman is not becouse of a vacination

Indeed this death is an extremely sad and unexpected ending and that too at just 50 years of age!

However, having watched the video on youtube on how the CPR resuscitation has been performed, I have to say I was incredibly disappointed.

For a CPR to be successful there must be vigorous pressure being applied with both hands on the chest for 2 minutes continuously to have any hope of recovery for a patient following a heart attack. If you watch a video sample on youtube on how to perform a CPR and compare it with how they handled the situation you'll see they have not done it properly at all.

My dad is a medical Doctor and I showed him the video and even he criticised the way they tried to treat him. There was a lot of time being wasted in the process.

By the time he was brought to hospital it becomes futile because if the brain does not receive blood supply and oxygen within approximately 3 minutes it dies as brain cells die. In circumstances like this bringing an ambulance is not going to be helpful. It is an emergency situation where proper CPR must be performed on the spot within 3 minutes! No ambulance is going to arrive in less than 3 minutes to rescue a patient following a heart attack.

Also proper medical check-ups must be performed. Although anyone can get a heart attack under extremely stressful situations there are also telltale signs where we all must be made aware for our own health. For example, you may experience periodic and intermittent pain in the heart, chest, irregular heart beat, dizziness, tiredness all due to unsmooth blood being supplied due to slightly blocked arteries. There's also a condition called angina also known as angina pectoris, is chest pain or pressure, usually caused by insufficient blood flow to the heart muscle.

We do not know the medical history of this chess player but there are treatments that can be made where Doctors can repair those conditions. Now he may have ignored some of these symptoms thinking they are benign. But unfortunately, it is quite possible that this could have been prevented.

Not to mention, all staff members and chess players participating in tournaments should be taught basic skills on how to perform a CPR in the rare event that such a circumstance occurs again. I agree defibrillators must also be made available at all tournaments. Of-course there's no guarantee that the patient will still recover but it increases the chances of potentially saving someone's life!
