Is it much less or similar? Considering people online at peak time as well.

Day time GMT Lichess can have over 100 thousand players online. However, night time it is lower like for example now at 5:30am GMT there are 46 thousand players online.
Chess.com on the other hand has 200+ thousand players playing, I don't know if these are only the players in live games or the total number of players that are online on the server that aren't playing.
Regardless, I have never had difficulty finding opponents on Lichess in almost 6 years since playing here. However, sometimes in classical I have to wait a little longer due to less players online playing classical compared to bullet and blitz. But that's not more than a 2 minute wait.
I've only had difficulty matching up on the Free Internet Chess Server and MSN Gaming Zone where there would be less than 400 players online there. Sometimes I have to wait 10 minutes there before finding an opponent.
At this moment when I'm writing this - members online:
chess.com 295,038 (https://www.chess.com/members)
lichess.org 52,307
So looks like cc has 6x more.
Chess dot com has a recognizable domain name. Huge plus. I only learned about Lichess from a friend who left chess dot com and told me about Lichess.
If you study the chess dot com forum comments, the experienced, high ELO players that were there six months ago have disappeared. New users don't know this and don't know why, so it will take them awhile to figure out it's a scam site crafted to separate them from their money, not to make them better chess players or provide a quality game experience.
The amount of users is not important. It's the feature you need or want that is.

Quantity is one thing, quality is another.
Lichess has more than enough quantity to be an active enjoyable chess community.
Here is an excellent comparison:

Forgot to add:
I did not know about Lichess, word of mouth brought me here (for which I am indeed grateful). From my experience I concluded I should do what I can in my dusty little corner of the world to let others know about Lichess, and to promote it. Think of what we could do if each of us let someone who loves the game know about Lichess. I think we all should. JMO.

I never really used chess24. Why does it have the best opening preparation?
