no round robin tournaments on lichess

Here lichess.org/swiss says:
"What about Round Robin?
We'd like to add it, but unfortunately Round Robin doesn't work online.
The reason is that it has no fair way of dealing with people leaving the tournament early. We cannot expect that all players will play all their games in an online event. It just won't happen, and as a result most Round Robin tournaments would be flawed and unfair, which defeats their very reason to exist.
The closest you can get to Round Robin online is to play a Swiss tournament with a very high number of rounds. Then all possible pairings will be played before the tournament ends."

That is incomprehensible to me. It is actually very easy to deal with people who leave the tournament early.
These people get a score of 0 without a fight. And their opponents get the victory with a score of 1.
This applies to all rounds in which these people do not participate. That is very easy! When people leave the tournament it's their problem.
Unfortunately, one cannot avoid that their opponents have to wait until they have an opponent again. But that's the fault of those who leave the tournament! But you can deal with other things during this time. That's how it works at OTB tournaments. That is my view of it!
Round robin tournaments are also designed to organize tournaments with a small number of participants. Let's say a number of participants up to 15. It's a matter of proper communication to get people to stay until the end of the tournament.

I leave it up to you to form your opinion about it. I just shared my opinion on that. Have fun!

"The closest you can get to Round Robin online is to play a Swiss tournament with a very high number of rounds. Then all possible pairings will be played before the tournament ends", this statement is false (wrong)! You cannot treat swiss tournaments like round robin tournaments! I already pointed that out in the other thread in several posts lichess.org/forum/lichess-feedback/swiss-tournaments-are-on-lichess! For example: lichess.org/forum/lichess-feedback/swiss-tournaments-are-on-lichess?page=26#254 ! Round robin is completely different from swiss system. You simply cannot compare the two systems! After a certain number of rounds there are no legal pairings anymore in the swiss system!
And most will find out when they try it. Unless one manipulate the Swiss system until it works. But then it is not a Swiss system in the sense of the inventor of this system anymore!
#1 With a TD certification program, yes... but Lichess is acting as the TD and inevitably someone will create a large RR and then blame Lichess when things go wrong. RR doesn't scale well without a TD certification program, which we don't have.

(Believe me, I had the same reaction at first, but now understand why things are complicated.)
Ideas for implementing a round robin tournament:
Set the variant, time control, maximum number of players, join by/start at, and end by times. These could be several hours, or several days apart.
After the start, whenever the players who have joined the round robin play the given variant, type, and time control against each other, they get asked if it's part of that tournament. If either of them says yes, then it counts towards the standings.
Maximum number of players allowed in round robin can be set to something like 16 or be depended on the duration of the tournament.
Just my two cents. We are playing the Lichess Antichess League with seasons, divisions, promotions, and relegations using Google sheets. It would be much easier for us if round robin was implemented here. :)
I hope that Mr. Thibault Duplessis (@thibault) and the Lichess development team will reconsider their position regarding the Round Robin.

Look at the case of the Swiss tournaments: at the beginning it was argued that they were not feasible, and now they are a reality. There is no problem without a solution.

Personally, my club and I look forward to the Round Robin tournaments more eagerly than the Swiss tournaments because we have few members.

The Round Robin system can focus on small teams. This would avoid the problems that limit its implementation.

So the winner of the tournament is someone who has the most AFK opponents? I'm sure it's very fair to someone who works hard to win and then gets tied for first with someone whose opponents left the game.

#6 that looks good tho
#8 "So the winner of the tournament is someone who has the most AFK opponents? I'm sure it's very fair to someone who works hard to win and then gets tied for first with someone whose opponents left the game."

in round robin everyone plays everyone. if someone leaves early, you have to count every game (also played ones) as a loss for the leaving player. the player also will not be allowed to join later on!

-> a leaving player won't have any impact on the result of the tournament.
@Negmek What means AFK? By the way: Players who have left the tournament (drop out players) have already been drawn for the rounds. Because at round robin, the pairings are already fixed in advance. Of course, then players who would have had to play against the drop out player get 1 point and the drop out player gets no point The drop out player loses and his opponent wins the game in question. Anything else is unfair to opponents of the drop out player! Players who have played against the drop out player before he has left the tournament and lost against him have the disadvantage, but that's the way it is. This is also done with otb round robins and is the standard procedure in these situations!
