Checked the commit, it now only dims when in a variation. Why dim it at all though? It will still be annoying when checking variations of a live game.
Anyhow, very much appreciate the quick fix and lichess is amazing overall!

Yes, I know when I've created a new line, I don't need a dull-coloured screen and a huge RED BUTTON to remind me.
This really is an unnecessary change. The vast majority won't see this, and those that do were happy with the way it was.
I'm more annoyed that I was forced to visit chess.com for the first time in years to be able to follow the games in the way I prefer.

Just hit me now, are these new features upon request by FIDE since they are using Lichess for their live stream? I can imagine the color fading in variations, and to always show the live clock, being useful when analyzing for viewers. But for a normal lichess user, it's just annoying.

- "Back to Live Move" button — useful for quickly returning to the current movement after several variations and not having to search
- The gray board, identical when the person is not in a real move (especially variants)
and these are not FIDE requests, it is especially to try to improve lichess

Okay, so I've been able to back-out the changes. But in doing so I've missed most of the first two rounds of today's tournament, a tournament I've been looking forward to all month.
-
"Back to Live Move" button: there's no need for this. The last move is surrounded by a red border. You just need to click it.
-
The grey board: unnecessary because variants are shown indented in the move panel.
These changes don't improve anything: they complicate it unnecessarily. I don't doubt folk mean well, but this is how enshitification happens: folk needlessly changing things that don't need to be changed.

@SergioGlorias I don't quite understand what you mean by point 2, why would that be useful? I am the one making the moves, of course I already know that I am in a variation. Sorry if I come of as rude, it's not my intention, I just don't understand the need (except if I'm a commentator on a live stream).

Yeah I don't understand why it's useful... Even though the grey board doesn't appear when seeing previous moves, it still appears when I introduce new moves.

Yeah, I can see why it's useful when broadcasting (still the effect is too strong, I think), but for personal use, it does seem unnecessary. Perhaps it could be made into something optional.
