The color changes a lot when you are not on the "live" move (if you, for example, want a quick check of the opening of an ongoing game). I can't imagine the majority of users would want this. It's especially bad for some board color settings where the difference in color is huge.
The new button "back to live move" is great though!
Also, wasn't it possible before to see the clock time at each move even if the game is still live? Now only the live clock is showing even when stepping through previous moves in the game.
I was just checking in on wrb today and when I noticed it immediately came here to write a post about it but you beat me to the punch! I like the "Back to live move" button, but please revert the grey color change, Lichess.

Yes please get rid of the grey filter and show the clock situation at the time of the moves again, the button is fine
Yes, please make the whole thing optional. The fading is bad, but the label overlaying the latest moves is worse for me. It makes analysing during the game more difficult.
Terrible time to roll this out. It's a big distraction given a major tournament is in progress.

I'm not a fan of the button either. The fast forward button already brings me to the latest move, so I don't need another massive button to do the same thing.
