I want to change my username. Why is there even a name change option if it won't let us change username? Like i give a f about uppercase or lowercase changes.

That doesn't change the feature is there, let's make it useful for everyone.

Changing usernames will cause problems in the lichess game database, so the developers don't allow it. The database overlooks capitalization in the usernames so they eventually allowed users to change the capitalizations if, for some reason, they want to.

How hard is it to just type a name in properly the first time? Do you have a mistake in your email address too?

I've had this username for a while and want to change it for online privacy reasons. Would rather not have to get a new account but looks like it's the only option. How hard is it to implement a bot that changes the database through some kind of dns filter really tho. Sure it's gonna take coding, but don't tell me it's impossible. Just not foreseen. Chess.com does it

Maybe the username is the primary key in the back end or something else which cannot be changed in order to secure db integrity.

That's it. If this problem had been considered at the start it would be trivial to change a name. It's not clear whether doing it this way was a bad idea or by design. Making it technically easy to change doesn't help with the problem of having the same name representing different people across time. Suppose I cheat and change my name and you use my old name; who gets banned? All the other chess sites have limitations on name changing suggesting it's not just technical issues at play here.
