Proposing a feature to address players intentionally wasting time

The fact remains: in OTB tournaments, an arbiter can step in if a player is clearly refusing to make a move in bad faith.

This "fact" remains to be established. I've never heard of this and I still want to know where you got this notion from. I suppose it is theoretically possible, but I've never heard of any actual cases happening. I would also expect the penalized player would try to appeal the decision and have good chances of winning the appeal, for the reasons people have mentioned elsewhere on this thread. So I find this claim dubious.

Please justify the quoted claim.

If a player in an OTB setting were to sit motionless for 30+ minutes without making a move, an arbiter would intervene.

I have never heard or seen something like this... and I have seen 30+ minutes deep thinking.

solution: don't play games over 2 minutes

thousands of online players have more than 1 device,, so they have Ai telling the cheaters the best move
after 15000 games I stopped playing 5 min games now I m over 40000 games trust my experience!!!

only play 2min to really improve and read old russian books jusss sayin

I've carefully read FIDE and USCF rules and made a video comparing the rules. Over the board there is no such rule.

On an unrelated matter I won't elaborate on, I've even been threatened by an arbiter before who didn't understand the rules, but even they need to follow the rules.

Just had someone sit 25 minutes in a check with only one legal move again. (Over 1000 games for the record....)

The automatic system doesn't notice this, as they made a last move and then resigned.

It's extremely annoying.

My time and mental energy I have for playing Chess is gone for today, wasted waiting for a move that never comes but never quite knowing IF it may still come and the game continues after 20 minutes waiting, which is also draining for me...

PS:
I know who cares..? I just wanted to vent, no need to answer.

PPS:
I just remembered, I wanted to mention that the person offered me a draw, I declined then they waited 25 minutes and after a last move resigned. Im pretty sure this has happened to me a couple of times now.

I guess that means it is registered. Good.

I assumed it wasn't because of the message that shows up sometimes "if you let time run out..." that people love to complain about. Shows again what happens when you assume...

I think you want L134

This particular opponent wouldn't have gotten the warning, as they still had a lot of time left.

Huh, I assumed they'd get the warning, but also I shared the code because I don't fully understand it.

The intent of FIDE’s rules, particularly Article 6.7, is to prevent players from abusing the clock in ways that undermine fair competition. While online chess lacks arbiters, platforms can implement automated measures to enforce this principle. An automatic resignation for prolonged inactivity—after a clear warning—would not be a deviation from standard chess rules but rather an adaptation for the online setting.

Many players have experienced situations where an opponent, in a clearly lost position, deliberately refuses to move and lets their clock run down. This is a well-documented issue in online chess and goes against the spirit of competitive play. By aligning LiChess policies with the intent of Article 6.7, we can uphold the standards of OTB play in the online realm and improve the experience for all players.
