"I wonder what is the benefit of cheating?" -- It is in human nature: what we do to win. Amateur cyclists and athletes even use doping, though it is detrimental to their health and though they practice their sport under their real name.

"I could imagine that new machine learning techniques could improve cheater detection." -- Yes that is what lichess does.

Yes, I think you are right about human nature.
To imagine someone copying out moves from the computer and thinking himself as a genius - that's very funny.
Maybe humor is the strongest weapon against cheaters for now.

#24 AI as a concept actually dates back to ancient Greece, although until recent decades a science for machine learning hasn't existed:

"Thousands of years before machine learning and self-driving cars became reality, the tales of giant bronze robot Talos, artificial woman Pandora, and their creator, the god Hephaestus, filled the imaginations of people in ancient Greece."

Q for moderators - does lichess release any information as to why an account was blocked? They just state it breached terms of service. We've had some players get their accounts blocked playing online in our club. Innocent reasons are claimed and you'd like to give the benefit of the doubt - but I assume cheating was the obvious reason. Is there any way to be sure ?

Sorry, we don't share details about accounts with anyone other than the account owner.
