So, I was texting with a user and this user had to go get smth. Some minutes later i saw above the inbox saying, tht the user was typing, but I couldn't see the green dot which is normally seen when someone is online. Only after I reloaded the page I was able to see it. It would be cool to be able to see it, without having to reload the page constantly
Edit: this issue has happened several times on google chrome from both ipad and pc

This seems to be across the entire site. If someone goes offline/online, it doesn't update until you refresh. And that's everywhere. Inbox, forums, user accounts. Everywhere but live games.

The suggestion doesn't make any sense, just clear your browser cache. You can't expect app developers to do everything for you.

The issue you report is legit, why did people downvote? lol
Maybe report it on github?
On the other hand, seeing when other people are online and when they're typing feels so stalky to me, I would be ok with removing the green dot altogether ^_^

Or maybe a status thing in the privacy settings. "Display offline" or something like that. That way, people who feel this way can disable it.

That would make lots of confusion in games when you see your opponent offline and is thinking for a long time. It might be hard to determine whether the user is actually thinking, left the game or offline.

Correct.
The current feature serves different purposes, and whatever is done should take that into account.
Showing that your current opponent is online can be different from showing that a friend or a random user is online (the setting could affect the latter for instance).
Again, I wouldn't be against removing it altogether.
Determining whether the user is thinking or left the game must in my opinion be done by the server (it is already and eventually shows the message "your opp left ... claim win, call draw"), and I don't need more info that messes with me.
But then again, the accuracy % was recently added, so I'm not optimistic about lichess walking in the "right" direction here.
I'm happy with the server tracking these things, but showing them to the users only adds fuel for stalkers and haters IMHO.

It could still show if your current opponent is online in the game, like it does now. It would only affect the other places.
