If user leaves inbox and then comes back, the dot seen in the inbox remains empty

It could still show if your current opponent is online in the game, like it does now. It would only affect the other places.
That would blatantly confuse new users:
Like this user is playing a game but offline at the same time.

It's the same way discord works. A user can be displayed offline, but still chat.
The game and profile online indicators are completely different. When you hover over the game one, it says "Joined the game" or 'Left the game". This should clear up the potential confusion.

It also shuldn't be too much coding, since it would be just like when ur playing a game, right?

The issue you report is legit, why did people downvote? lol
So one of them, downvotes all my posts, the other one idk
Maybe report it on github?

On the other hand, seeing when other people are online and when they're typing feels so stalky to me, I would be ok with removing the green dot altogether ^_^
Yes, but it does help, if u want to know if an online friend of Urs is online and if he can play with u

If they accept your challenge, they're online :-)

I also DM my friends ("can you play today after work?", things like that).

Also many times I'm online but not playing, or not available to play, or I left the tab open but I'm not really there.
It's more accurate if you send me a challenge and I accept it (I'm online + I can play), decline it (I'm online + I can't play). If I don't accept nor decline, then you know I'm not there right now regardless of what the green dot says.

IMHO the green dot only adds "stalky" anxiety on top of that ("he's online, why is he not taking my challenge?").

A setting was suggested.
Maybe it makes sense to show your active status only to your friends and not any other stranger on the Internet.
The problem is what do we define as a friend, because rn here you can follow anyone and it'll go to your list of so-called friends. I think it would make more sense to be able to choose who can see my online status, for example, share it only with the players I follow (not with who follows me), or to those where we both follow each other.

So, I was texting with a user and this user had to go get smth. Some minutes later i saw above the inbox saying, tht the user was typing, but I couldn't see the green dot which is normally seen when someone is online. Only after I reloaded the page I was able to see it. It would be cool to be able to see it, without having to reload the page constantly
Edit: this issue has happened several times on google chrome from both ipad and pc

lichess has to fix it
