I do not think it can be done automatically. There are situations especially in pawn endgames, where one wrong move can change your evaluation from, say, #14 to -63.1. So just the evaluation is not able to tell if there is still a chance for the losing side. I agree with Toadofsky: moderator's work shouldn't be automized.
By the way: the problem is highly overrated. I do not like to sit in front of the screen with a queen and a rook ahead and wait for the time running out. But still, I never lose more time than I agreed when I started the game.
One special thank to @Jirestedt. It is rare that a "sinner" confesses publicly - and makes other people understand! I honor this highly. The world would be a better place if criminals would just explain their misbehaviour rather than even trying to hide it after discovered. (Of course I do not compare the threadstarter with a criminal, it is just the principle of his openness that I like.)

They read the forum, yes. They've also seen this proposed a million times.

#11 Even if some automation occurs, an engine (and especially not an engine evaluation) should not be part of that automation.
And yeah, the "zomg an engine would solve more problems than it creates" is quite exciting and has been proposed many times & each time I say the same thing. Not trying to be a buzzkill here but we do seriously consider proposals (even if my response to many proposals is either "that's a bad idea" or "that isn't easy" or "that might be easy but I don't think Lichess developers would do it").
Details in software can be hard... just take a look at this bugfix which I've been waiting on for almost 30 days :-D https://github.com/official-stockfish/Stockfish/pull/2218

Update.
Now I have, like I said in my first statement, completely stopped letting time run down on purpose.
I did, however, do this perhaps 5-10 times in the beginning.
BUT! I have now in the recent 2 weeks been temporarily banned from playing about 5 times!
Is this karma or just bad programming from lichess?
Sometimes I get warnings (don't let clock run down) but in all cases, those are times when I'm thinking about a move (probably about to lose, but not always)!!! IN A LOT OF GAMES YOU ACTUALLY HAVE TO LET THE CLOCK RUN DOWN! (to find your move, to find a way out)
So when I did let time run down on purpose nothing happened, but now when I don't I get banned again and again!

Your game history says your last 18 games were aborted: https://lichess.org/@/Jirestedt/all
Aborting 18 consecutive games is enough to get banned several times over.

Technically, if your game is long enough to make you impatient waiting for the other player to move, it's not their problem. I mean, if you're playing 30+20, maybe someone DOES want to spend 10 minutes thinking about the perfect move, then executing the rest of the moves in a non time-consuming sequence.
Though yes, if you're losing, either you play on or you resign. Don't waste other people's time just because you're a sore loser.
As for banning, even the worst of players would make a desperate move before time ran out, so I guess that's how you can tell.
Oh yeah, and one more thing. I personally would mind if someone let their time run out when they were losing, but I wouldn't care too much. This is because I have the notifications activated. So I can just open a new tab, do whatever, and go back to that tab when it's my turn to play.

#16, saw it.
Are you sick, @Jirestedt ?

That is strange. Must be a BUG.
Why would anyone have 18 aborted games in a row?
Some kind of AUTOplay creating new games?
