I admit it. I used to let time run out on purpose.
I figured it was a nasty little revenge for losing a game (and it really is because most people find this behavior really annoying!) But then people started doing it to me and I stopped doing it, realizing the behavior is ruining the fun for the game and the spirit of the community.
And the solution to the problem is:
Whenever lichess prompts the warning, "WARNING: LETTING TIME RUN OUT WILL RESULT IN A TEMPORARY BAN" then a game analysis should be activated (in the background), and this analysis can see if the game is considered an obvious loss or a situation that actually requires a lot of time to think. This analasys should easily find situations such as K+Q+Q VS K to be an obvious Resign scenario. This could "prove" if a player is purposely letting time run out or not. And after such "proof" there can be a temporary ban on that player and after a couple of bans a permanent ban. This will require some in-dept programming but should work in my judgment.
Thank you!

Seems a good idea. It happened to me 5 minutes ago in classical ! He was online the whole time but he didn't play for 10 minutes which is really long. But we were on move 13 and had the same material and an equal position. So I don't know what happened but if the position is completely losing, it seems obvious to me that the player must be punished.

"Nasty little revenge for losing the game" - lol this is something I have wanted to understand. Did the loss really get so much under your skin that you needed to start behaving like an ah* and use methods that are not actually part of the deal? I mean it's just a game?
Anyhow congrats for seeing the light and cheers for admitting your former mistake, and for trying to solve the problem.

A quite highly reliable ban system would be easy to implement.
So why lichess and other chess sites use only warnings? Well, it's quite simple:
From many years of experience I can tell you: internet sites prefer traffic over anything else.
So, I doubt this is going to be ever resolved.
ps: please don't shoot the messenger...

@laatikko Well, for me, chess is not a game. It is a passion and that is why when I lose, I am often angry because I want to be the best version of myself. But I am not angry against my opponent, I am angry against myself because I blundered or missed an opportunity or miscalculated or my opponent simply made better choices than mine but I learned to assume my choices's consequences. If the other player insults you after losing or the problem here is letting the time running out, you must be proud of you because it means you played better than your opponent. I always say "Good game" to my opponent even if I lost. And only in doing so, you become better at chess.
That is what a lot of beginners specifically young beginners players don't have yet. Experience.

@TheHiddenStep "internet sites prefer traffic over anything else."
What are you talking about?

@DavidDCPereira even if you have a passionate interest in chess: thinking about various activities human beings can exercise, whether or not get upset about them, and even behave badly because of the course the activity has taken, chess is just a game.

"... then a game analysis should be activated"
No. Lichess executes temporarily bans regardless of whether Stockfish, Goldfish, or SuperPawn think you are better, equal, or worse. Some engine - especially not an evaluation, which isn't even a mate score, but just a preference for that engine (something hotly debated in terms of SF versus Leela where "the eval is wrong") - isn't going to tell moderators how to do their job.

Toadofsky. What are you talking about?
I just want to bring up an idea here. The point was to reach lichess staff but if that's not possible there is no point.
Do they read the forum?
I don't think you could have a "report bad behavior button". Let's say you have 3 default options on what to report:
- Bad language
- Not resigning (letting time run out)
- Other
This would probably require a human checkup since reporting falsely will be a "bad behavior" in itself.
And I can't imagine there would be resources for that if lichess doesn't even have time to read the forum.
