How hard is it to create a website like lichess?

I feel lichess has several people that programmed this website using different programming languages and that too for free!!
lichess is free, clean and simple. Why doesn't lichess just ask for money for some things for example creating a tournament...
and other chess websites you have to pay!

Truly lichess is great! Hats off to lichess!

Lichess was awesome. There are three kind of things that I admire most, first NASA, second WHO then lichess

You admire WHO @hisokaxhunter ?! It is the organization which could have stopped COVID-19 from spreading everywhere but miserably failed.

@The_Human_Paradox You can't stop a virus when you're sharing the planet with fellow voters like this:

“Just before the patient died, they looked at their nurse and said ‘I think I made a mistake, I thought this was a hoax, but it’s not,’”

Frankly I'm surprised they survived their Gravity Party.

Lichess is ridiculously complex and built up over the years:

Here are some extracts from their website that I have slightly reworded:

Pychess is a free, open-source chess server designed to play several chess variants based on lichess.

On client side, the user interface of the game board is based on chessgroundx.

The source code of the server is available on GitHub.Then they've got Lichess to thank. Lichess was also born out of the same open-source spirit, and it too drew in great people as well. Once Lichess incorporated Stockfish as its brains, the rest is history.

Lichess enables the online, real-time, and competitive aspects of game-play. They also bring the enormous power of Stockfish to the masses, who can now benefit from it without configuring a local GUI. I believe this development turns out to be of great consequence and significance.
