Will chess 960 ever replace classical chess?

Will grand masters eventually get tired of all the opening theory out there and gradually abandon modern chess in favor of 960?or will 960 forever remain a variant?

960 will certainly not remain a variant forever, and neither will chess.

I don't have a clue as to what paradigm shifts will occur; I doubt that 960 will ever become the new standard, but who knows?

As for Grandmasters specifically...why would they spend so much time and effort on reaching that title only to throw it away in favor of randomness?

Was Fischer a prophet, or merely an eccentric and slightly mad anomaly?

Because knowing opening theory is not what makes a person a grandmaster, grandmasters can still excel without knowing all the theory.

It does look unlikely that chess960 will replace classical chess,
but I dont know either.
I think Its more likely that they will create a bigger version of chess with two extra pieces, like capablanca chess or something like that.
The reason for this is that chess players love opening theory,
now Im a weak player and despite it, I do enjoy the little I know of opening theory, there is a sense of beauty of knowing that all the games correpond to the same tree, so I believe the stronger the chess player the more games he has seen and He will be more attached to chess history and say hey that was the game that was played 50 years ago, or 2 centuries ago.
I think chess players love that myself included although I only know a couple of games, well only one, the opera game of morphy I have seen already some games maybe a 100 in chessgames.com.
So my intution tells me that there will be only one initial position because chess players are not card players
and prefer to "master" the game than to play with more unknown variables more entropy.
Also It is the job of some grandmasters so Its logical that they will prefer a more stable game.
I suppose they will get tired of playing the same game
but I dont know how long it will take,
just look at this game that someone posted in the forum yesterday

they will have to realize soon that they need a bigger game,
they already play to well, little to discover in the board for grandmasters.

I've never known a grandmaster personally, but I imagine that the vast majority of them have studied a ton of theory...

It's an interesting thought. I don't believe it will happen, but beliefs are not knowledge.

Chess will evolve given enough time, but an emergence of random chess as the norm among either gm's or the general populace just seems unlikely to me. Maybe I am too near-sighted.

random chess has no true competitive value. moreover, on a true board how will you randomize them?
the classical chess will survive, and that crazy idea of fischer will eventually dissapear for sure

#7 "Random chess has no true competitive value"

I don't know but it seems to me that chess960 returns us to chess innocence. Classical chess is not going to disappear. I think chess960 will keep on growing with his classical brother.

For me Chess960 is the best chess variant, even better than classical chess. It is more creative and the endgame is what is chess all about, not the opening or the ELO math. Maybe even grandmasters want this switch to creativity, but they won't until it's commercial interesting. In the mean-time I'm afraid chess will lose young creative public, and the top players will switch too late.
