played a guy who rejected a draw offer
he lost his perpetual check by trying to keep playing
but i still had him in a mate in one position
and then he stopped moving
he let his clock run FOR BLEEPING EVER
i got better things to do than watch clocks tick down for several minutes to do the mate in one and end it
i gave up waiting and went to lunch
the schmuck apparently waited until he had a few seconds and then moved hoping i was gone and he would << " win " >>
when i came back later the screen said i had timed out to zero
if he considers that win then i truly feel sorry for that schlub
but it is solid proof that we must limit the amount of time that can be used on a single move

Do you know how to avoid this ? Don't quit your game or don't begin a game just before lunch.

Well, time control already kinda covers that. If you want people to play fast then play blitz. In a long game 30+ minutes can be spent on one all-important move.

I can't see any recent games of yours where your opponent did that. Link to the game or it didn't happen.

Then don't go to lunch in the middle of the game lol.

Uh, just go to another tab and see when it says 'Your Turn' on the tab. Or just stay in the game. And stare at the board. It's not your opponent's fault if you decided to play 30+30 Classical.

If you did have mate-in-one available, you could always premove the checkmate. Then there's no chance for you to lose on time; the moment your opponent moves is the same moment that they lose.
Limiting the time available per move seems like a bad idea to me. As has been said on the lichess FAQ about this exact issue, "Thinking is not against the rules." In most cases where I see an opponent use a significant amount of time, it's to think about the position, not to spite me.

Report players who do that and move on.
I, for one, would rather see most games played out well with players free to use their time as they wish and have to endure this poor behavior every once in a while than to see many more of my games go poorly because either side is unable to use the time that is necessary for a certain position.

@natello35
its about having to waste time waiting for someone who is not there
it happens all the time
they are losing and they disappear
you have to wait until LI says they left so you can claim
but some dont leave leave but just leave the pc on so LI wont give you the claim option
and a few will wait until just a few seconds are left and then move hoping to win
NOTE: these are CASUAL games unrated
if it was a tournament i would be there till their clock did run out

@NeverBeenTimid
you are totally illogical
it happened
it happens a lot
these are casual games
most people are not dumb enough to do it in a rated game

@fpvbmct
it was mate in one
the guy was clearly not going to move
and since it was a casual game why should i wait to go to lunch
the game was meaningless. i had mate in one. i have nothing to prove by hanging around and doing it if he might move.
