Why Lichess forbids us to choose our adversary

<Comment deleted by user>

Well, you can't abort games that have already started. If you do this often enough, you'll get a temporary play ban, as you have already experienced.

If you suspect someone is violating our fair play rules, you should report them via https://lichess.org/report

And that's a really bad way to spot cheaters. Real players are naturally inconsistent, players playing consistently are often doing so because they're getting help. I mean, this weekend I beat a 2100 and lost to a 900. Report me if you like.

A few months ago I lost to a couple of 900s in blitz. Far more recently I've beaten a 2400 and two National Masters (almost surely aided by them kindly and honorably berserking). After gloriously losing around 100 points in a day, I've lately been floating between the 1500s and 1600s as I seem unable to kick my habit of gifting my queen to opponents and identifying key threats only immediately after making a move.

I will refrain from a detailed analysis of how such a range of performance is possible, I feel safe saying, though, that sleep deprivation and some basic over the counter medicines play a part for me. And I am absolutely 100% sure cheating is not a factor in any form at all.

So please take my single case as one of what are surely many examples showing that your system in identifying cheaters isn't, to say the least, all that accurate. The apparent fact that the experts and systems at Lichess don't bluntly use such an obvious pattern to consider should already say much. To put it simply, at most rating levels, including yours, players are there for a wide range reasons such as their skill set and playing style. This leads to immense variations in how they perform against people of different ratings. What you're identifying as suspicious is in fact normal.

I'm sorry to hear you aren't relaxed playing here. But the solution for your problem, which I genuinely hope you find, isn't for Lichess to apply a selection criteria that is neither based on good evidence nor fair. And the solution also isn't to one-sidedly apply one's own theories of cheating patterns and waste the time of others who play fairly and who, like you, desire a positive playing experience. Cheating is already enough of a problem that we need not pile on others. Good luck finding some peace with this all.

If you play many games it's natural to sometimes lose to low rated opponents and win to high rated. Everyone have their good and bad days and I think a span of over 1000 points between lowest rate losses and highest rate victories is entirely normal.

OP... abandoning a game is unfair. Don’t complain if you get banned!

best block them.... Not that it will do any good. Usernames are easy to come by. Does lichess at least IP ban? Idk.

If you are creating custom games lichess should give you the opportunity to control when the game starts, even if it's limited to 15 seconds or something. That would give you a few seconds to look at their profile before the game timer starting. And if you don't want to play them, booooooot them out.

That kind of logical control is not likely to come our way though. Because Lichess likes that control on their end. After all, they are in the business of feeding games and opponents to you that they think will drive you to more playing. Even if the tactic is to piss you off. They have this down like a science. How much time you should or should not have to wait for a game partner, etc. They want that control. Oh well, throw it in their suggestion box. Doh, they don't have one? Wonder why...

I'm really fed up to come accross so many cheaters which abound on this platform.

Abandoning, or refusing to play a game, can be as a form of cheating, as you might select some one you can think you can beat.

Also, its annoying for the other player, as you have to queue up, wait for a moment, load the game, and then wait for the opponent (you) to make a move. Just to have it decline it.

You waste your opponents time, which is rude by itself. Well desserved that punishment, and it should be even more rigid IMO.

Hi,
I play on Lichess since three years, and for the first time, I've been suspended for nine minutes today, then twelve minutes, because I've cancelled too many times a game at its beginning. But if I started to refuse so many chess games, it's only because I'm really fed up to come accross so many cheaters which abound on this platform. So, now, before starting a game, I look on the player profile, and when I see he beats some 1700-1800 players, but was beaten by some 700-800 others, it's - for me - suspicious enough to refuse the meeting.

I don't understand why Lichess doesn't allow to choose a good partner, when cheating is so aboundant and seemingly undectable, if really Lichess want us to live here a relaxed expérience in a good atmosphere.

We have therefore to suffer cheating in silence, or give up playing online ?

Everybody wins games against higher rated players and loses to lower rated players every once in a while. You were wasting other people's time aborting games, so the time out wasn't unfair in any way. Plus, there's literally no cheaters at your rating.
