I was wondering why some professional FIDE players rated over 2400 do not claim titles such as (FM) or (CM). I will leave some links below for such cases.

Shouldn't they get titles frequently once they pass the required points or is it optional and up to them?

People have to apply for the title and pay a fee for FIDE to process their application.
Some people consider CM and FM as not real titles and wait to apply until IM.
I know a player who refused to apply for IM, as he was aiming for GM.
Imo the only reason to apply for CM is the free use of some internet sites. To be honest - it's only a target, not a real title.

Titles come with some perks: sometimes no entrance fees in tournaments, sometimes an appearance fee, sometimes a complimentary hotel room

Don't you have to pay a fee to get the title?
Maybe they just don't want to pay multiple times and wait until they get a better title.

I believe for FM title you need to pay to the FIDE. Not sure whether that applies for IM and GM as well. Probably does for CM because some people claim that FIDE invented the CM title to get more cash.
Also, in the past during quite some years the FIDE could be considered to be a kind of "corrupt" organization, which hopefully is over now that GM Short is the new chairman.

You have to pay a fee for all titles.
That is only fair: FIDE has to spend time to look into the application and to verify if all criteria are truthfully met.
Otherwise many people all over the world could flood FIDE with unjustified title applications.
