For the same reason we call it Internet Radio, even though radio waves aren't used. Or Thursday, when we don't believe in Thor.
Actually, I think it's more ignorance than habituation in this instance.
Elo is synonymous with rating
I wonder why they call it Elo even when Elo is the algorithm used. I wonder if, back in the day, people needed to differentiate between Elo and Harkness.

I think I've seen this particular gripe 3 times on the lichess forum today alone. I don't know why everyone is so worked up about their ELOs rating but I can't imagine many people can remain ignorant that the gripe exists.
