what is the fastest way to get out of the lichess database?

i was able to get out of it in 3 moves with 1.a4 a6 2.g3 Ta7 3.c3

I wonder if that's impressive (taking 5 half-moves to get out of the database) or not.

How many positions can be reached after 5 half-moves (after White's 3rd move)? It's more than 20^5/5! = 26666 in any case. (20 possible moves at the start of the game and rising, divide by 5! = 120 because, up to a point, the order the moves are played in doesn't matter.)

EDIT: I didn't see your posting #2 before typing that. You've done it in 4 half-moves. More than 20^4/4! = 6666 positions after Black's 2nd move.

now it took me 4-half moves and its difficult because it can transpose

Yes. I think the rising number of possible moves probably offsets the reduction of positions due to transpositions, but that's just a gut-feeling and I'm not sure.

yes i dont think its possible to get out with 3 half moves

It's such a hard problem! Of course dividing by 5! or 4! was nonsense because the order the moves are played in does require White and Black to play on their turns!

I give up. :-)
