what are the best openings ?

"I disagree that 1.e4 e5 and 1.d4 d5 are 'simple' to defend" * They are most natural. The good moves indicate themselves.

"they are very theory-heavy" * 1 e4 c5 and 1 d4 Nf6 are heavier in theory

"there are many risky lines" * Even more in 1 e4 c5 or 1 d4 Nf6

"if you play wrong, you get positionally crushed" * Even more in 1 e4 c5 or 1 d4 Nf6

"I would advise an initial opening avoiding theory" * Such as? Al that is good has been played more often and thus has more theory.

"play the French for black" * French Defense is sound, but hard to play correctly. You get a cramped position and problems to develop Bc8. White gets an attack based on his pawn on e5.

"a similar setup against d4 maybe with e6" * 1 d4 d5 2 c4 e6 is very good and simple. 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 e6 is sound too, but harder to play correctly.

I am looking for an ideal opening repertoire for both white and black
Please give me your suggestions
I am open to all responses :)
see, an ideal opening from white is four knight scotch and from black you can play the 'normal development' and mainly it depends upon what white plays as there are many options like english, london, etccc.

Alekhine answered to the quetion :"what is the best opening ?" "It is the one you know best" . Of course french defense has a more solid reputation than saint georges defense :-) . But if you know all the variations and your opponent not (1e4 a6 is not often play ...) it's ok . SO the real question is: "How much time do you want to devote to studying chess ?"

A former instructor taught me that openings following 1. d4 ... , when played correctly, often result in an advantage held longer for White than 1. e4 ... . In other words, Black has to fight longer and harder to equalize. I don't play 1. d4 very often because I have not mastered any of the many openings which stem from 1. e4 ... and I believe I need to study tactics more thoroughly before moving on to openings which use a bit more strategy. If I am wrong, please let me know. I am still learning...

there are NO one size fits all. No Bests.

In the example of the Fool's Mate, White's first move should have a question mark after it. White's second move should have two question marks (it's a blunder, and the worst move White can make). Why do people use this as an example except to teach people how NOT to open with White?

I would suggest people use the best examples they know, unless they are trying to eliminate bad opening examples. There are MANY bad opening moves...too many to count.
