Morphy definitely
as a lawyer?
Paul Morphy was like Carlsen, a pansy sibiling wanting to satisfy his elder sibling.
Morphy like champions from those days, didn't have any books/training to learn and sharpen his games.
So, players from that era were all genius.
@sm2019 There is no objective answer to such a question. Both were two of the most dominant World Champions in their time (There was no World Championship in Morphy's era, but he wiped out every one of his opponents in matches, and that too spending relatively little time, so had there been an official championship he would have held it for sure.) Because the resources available to the players were so different in each era, we can conclude that although both are two of the greatest players of all time, we don't know for sure who is better.
@kaissa44 the objective answer is that fischer was the better player
just like in anything people a hundred years later just are better because there have been a century of new discoveries
if morphy would have been better than fischer given the same resources is another question
but yeah it's just not comparable
Kasparov has said something like "Kids today can know more about chess in a week with the internet and an engine than Capablanca or Lasker ever did" in the Lex Fridman Podcast i think
the only thing we can compare is how much they were ahead of their competitiors and in that regard i think morphy was the better
Both nuts.
Sarg0n Is the worst chess player
@jesgluckner Fischer was better, but I think the person asking meant who was "greater." They most probably knew that a player later in time would be better due to more resources.
@PrathamOne What is your problem?
