You can do both studies and chess at same time. Multitask. Open 2 windows. Play only Rapid and longer time control.
Both of-course. Study alone is pointless, if you aren't going to play any games. I do both. I study openings, traps and then I try and attempt these in my games. This gives you experience and of-course joy.
It's important to balance them, though. Too much study might kill your play time and then you don't have much time to play.
Focus on school first always!! Chess is a game not a career unless you are like the top 1000 players.
