It depends. Over the board? The one who shakes their leg, twirls a piece, coughs, picks their nose and farts between each move is certainly up there on my annoy-o-meter..

The most annoying type of opponent?

Scenario:

You’re playing a game with someone and you both have about 15 minutes left on the clock. Some exchanges are made and your opponent is clearly way behind. It would take a couple of big blunders on your part for your opponent to have a chance. Then your opponent takes 3 minutes to make a move, but he has no fork, tactic or anything at his disposal. Then he takes another couple of minutes to make his next banal move. Then, for his next move, when he has 10 minutes left, he lets his clock run down to ten seconds in slim chance that you’ve left the game.

@Greasyjohn i always feel guilty when looking for a last resort, but then i think, hey he is winning why would he feel bad. But annoying if they only have 1 single legal move and start thinking for a minute or longer. Im also annoyed by all the master titles, i think fide should introduce a new one : master proper.

@Funkmaus Truth is, the exclusion has a basis. Women players tend to have fewer irritating habits. Not sure why. Maybe it's a macho hormone thing. Maybe because women save all their aggression for internal consumption, self doubt. Maybe because they are better people. (Well, let's not go too far.)
