"Take Back" Function

Every second game I play my opponent makes a bad move, at some stage, and requests a "take back". I like to be charitable and accept them. Although have lost many a game as a consequence...

I guess my question is... why do so many players request and expect "take backs" from their opponents after making poor moves?

When I make a bad move (which is all the time) I own it and carry on. Why do so many players out there try to walk them back? Isn't making mistakes all part of the game?

One vote from me for Lichess to remove the "take back" function :-)

You do not have to remove the button: you can switch it off in your profile.
Instead of begging for take backs, people can activate move confirmation in their profile so as to grant themselves infinite takebacks.

Imagine if "take backs" were an acceptable "norm" as part of any other sport.

You're playing a game of tennis at your local tennis club.  You're opponent hits an easy forehand into the net.  He then says to you "can I take it back"?

Your first response would be uncontrollable laughter.

Takebacks are there to take your move back when you mouseslip. Of course, the opponent decides if he accepts it. But i think its a helpful feature online. And the move confirmation things wont solve any problems. In a blitz or bullet game, you will lose much time because of move confirmation. Also, why should I activate move confirmation if i have no problem? I mean sometimes i mouseslip and ask for a takeback, and if they accept i am happy. If they not, i just resign and accept the loss. So i have no problem. The people who complain about their opponents asking for takebacks, just should deactivate it.

I will sometimes accept takebacks in rapid or classical, if my opponent has clearly made a mouseslip. It makes the game meaningful, even if I go on to lose.

I don't see the point in blitz, when mouse skills are essential to the game (as in over the board chess, where being able to move pieces accurately at speed is an important technique).

#3 lmao true story. Last round of an otb tournament in my municipality and my opponent was blitzing out moves out of the opening. It made me also blitz out and thennn i hung my knight a minute after the game starts. I legit asked the kid if i can takeback since it just started and everybody laughed. I won in the end though :)

Thanks all. I have subsequently switched off the "take back" function in my profile (didn't know that was possible).

I am sympathetic for allowing "take backs" on genuine finger slips (unintentional moves). However, in reality perhaps only 20% of the take backs I received would fit into that category. The vast majority were simply bad moves that my opponent wanted to wind back.

If the "take back" feature was designed to cater for finger slips, then that's not what most of my opponents appeared to be using it for.....

Anyway, I won't need to worry about this any more.

I use takebacks in casual games alot. When I am playing with a friend and am trying to show them a certain line I calculated its nice to be able to reset back to our original position.
