As a scholar myself I believe that it is essential for the young mind to be exposed to the intricated combinations and essence of chess.

It is in some US schools.
Is the current evidence for benefits stronger or weaker than the evidence for music ed? Curious because afaik a much larger % of US schools still have music ed than chess. Wouldn't surprise me if its the opposite in some other countries.

I don't think it should be compulsory. If a student takes an interest first , then there should be time devoted to chess in schools.

Yes, chess clubs in schools should be supported with appropriate resources wherever possible.

It is already I believe, in Spain.
"Spain’s parliament this year unanimously adopted a law allowing regional governments to introduce chess as a compulsory or optional subject in schools. The law won the rare unanimous backing of lawmakers from rival parties. The opposition socialist party deputy who drafted it, Pablo Martin Pere, cited studies showing that an hour of chess a week could boost pupils’ performance in maths by 30 per cent. Education studies by the OECD economic grouping have regularly shown that Spanish pupils lag behind their peers in other developed countries in maths and reading."

Classrooms should focus on theory like:
Communication skills;
Logical reasoning;
Civil awareness;
Scientific literacy.
The hands-on practical & exploration subjects should be in a club setting environment. That means less time at school and more time in clubs. All students should be able to pick a club, like it was something they would like to do in life. Schools could have theory in the morning and activity in the afternoon or the other way around, depending on the weather.
A) Music: Instruments and singing
B) Art & painting: Studio and Trade
C) Performers: Reading out-loud, make up stories and act them out
D) Chess: Indoor at the library or Outdoors with large chess sets.
E) News Feed: School news paper, practice sharing ideas, learn about the Stock-market and stock-brokers.
F) Gardeners: School gardening
G) Chefs: Making tasty treats
H) Explorers: Outdoor trails, walking, jogging, museums, camp ground activities, cadets, scoots.
I) Robotics: Design and build things, mechanics.
J) Photo & film making: Learn photography and film-making skills
K) Job related: Students visit government settings and other work environment.
The list does not have to stop there. The clubs could have week-end events too. It doesn't have to stay in a classroom environment for millions of years. Modernising schools to change the world would be a smart approach. I think academic schools is the future not general school settings.

As a requirement, no. As an elective for credit, why not?
