rating points

Hi everybody! I already raised the question of rating points before, but then I didn't get a complete understanding of the issue and playing more games I am getting more and more confident that I come to conclusion that the rating system is working on a very strange algorythm. Here is the latest case. I was playing an opponent who I unfortunately lost to. I was rated 2052 against 2140 of my opponent. So I lose the game and get 4 point deducted (which is fine as a lower rated), but my opponent gets +8! At this point I just lose all the logics of point scoring. The game ended cause the time ran out, by the way. Can anybody kindly comment and explain me why the points break down like that?

Your opponent had higher rating deviation, most likely.

if they started playing like few days or weeks ago. that is how it works.
if you win, you get so many points
if you loose, you loose so many points

Don't really know how this rating deviation influences the game points. For me it is very strange as normally one gets +8 points winning against an approximately +200 rated opponent and here the player got +8 playing a 100 point lower opponent.

@stars_sophie It was not a new player. The rating was stable, no ? marks in the rating. We played already before..

Don't really know how this rating deviation influences the game points.

  • If you have a high rating deviation (RD), you lose or gain more points, all else being equal. If your RD is low, on the other hand, your rating changes less drastically after wins or losses, it's "stabilized".

  • Your rating deviation is very high when you first sign up.

  • a "?" for the provisional rating is an indicator of high RD, but even if the "?" is gone, opponents may have different RD values, and one may gain/lose more points than the other, even if their rating is similar. This is intentional - the player with higher RD has a more volatile rating, so it's quicker to settle on the best estimate for his real position in the pool.

  • RD is reduced by playing many games
-BUT it also goes up again if you're inactive on the site -> your rating is more volatile again until you have played a decent amount of recent games.

  • by the way, you can look up your RD in your profile.

The question mark only tells you whether the rating deviation is higher or lower than a threshold of 110. I.e. not having a question mark can mean a rating deviation anywhere between the minimum (45) and 110, having it can mean rating deviation anywhere between 110 and the maximum (IIRC 250).
