100 ping is tolerable. That's what I usually have and I don't find it to be all that bad. 500 would probably be completely unplayable.
Isn't there lag compensation? 500 ping would be very annoying for both players but you're not going to lose any time because of it.
With a ping of 500, as a standard, not once in a while, you are just a nuisance and should not play at all. imho
