I started taking chess seriously a few months ago, and its so classless to not resign if you're gonna stop playing.
A great solution would be an algorithm that pairs these habitual clock drainers against each other, whenever reasonably possible. That would be sweet justice there, they can play in their own crybaby tiers and drive each other nuts.

Also, you can turn up your sound and do something else, it's not that bad and you know you're going to win :).
If they get paired against each other, they might think it's common online practice which might not help them to play sport.
I think the more friendly the atmosphere is, the better the chances for players to behave properly.

If people don't resign, promote all your pawns to knights and only then checkmate them. If everyone starts doing this they will get sick of it. After all, it is theirr right to play on until mate so it's not something to get too annoyed about, use it as an opportunity to have some fun :)

@soni777new
They are not referring to a player who will play on in a bad position until checkmated. Those players are fine, nothing wrong with that.... What he is talking about is the players who get into a worse or losing position... Then simply don't move waiting for their clock to run out.
This tactic is used for one of two reasons.
- To annoy your opponent.
- The off chance that they can claim a victory if you disconnect.

@lurarose I must strongly disagree - people who play on in hopeless positions are as disrespectful as players who just let their clock run. More so, even - "Yeah, I'm down a queen, rook, knight, and 4 pawns, but I believe you'll do the 12 blunders needed for me to win the game!"

There is no such thing as a "hopeless position," even against opponents who are 2100+ rated I win games where I was down 8+ points according to the computer.
Refusal to stop playing for a win, even when your position is objectively super-bad, is worth a few hundred rating points.
@amwhere at your rating level it would probably be worth 150 points to never resign! Just never resign. Make your opponent show you all the different mating patterns. Look for tactics all the way to the last move. It is objectively the only correct answer once you realize that it truly gains you rating points. It also improves both your attacking and defensive tactics.
And it isn't really uncommon for me to be down a full piece and then burn most of my clock looking for tactics. But also, I actually win a lot of those games! Also if you resign whenever things look bad, if you're doing post-game analysis then afterwards you find out, whoops, you were actually winning if you found the right tactic.
Just a couple days ago I had a game that had swung -4, +4, and then it went back to -0.6 and my op resigned because he didn't realize that the endgame was drawn with perfect play. He'd have had a hard time holding it, but if you practice actually playing those you'll get better at them.
I've had a 2000+ op miss a mate in one in the endgame, because he thought he already saw a different mate in 2, but whoops I had an extra square, draw! Happens to somebody every day on here.

winning a won position is as much part of chess as getting to said position. Would you resign if you had just the king and opp had a knight+bishop? It is completly lost, yet you play hoping the opponent cant checkmate you. As Aighearach said, ive also won games that I had +10 disadvantage, or when the other missed a checkmate. Where I must disagree though, is that there ARE hopeless positions, and I do resign sometimes. Diferent people just have diferent ideas of what a 'hopeless position' is.
For me, it is NOT disrespectfull at all to play a position just because you have a disadvantage. But at the same time, it is also NOT disrespectfull to promote all your pawns to knights before checkmating, because if the other doesnt like it, he can resign, nobody is forcing him to play. What i DO consider disrespectfull is simply letting you time run out without playing anything - youre doing nothing more than wasting time, where in both the previous situations you were playing chess.

Oh, it is so annoying when cowards just leave without resigning. Childish with too big egos I guess? I always_ban_those_players but still, I don't think that is any good behavior. =(

Aighearach: Okay I'll bite. Show me how you win with lone king vs 3 queens and king. You said there's no hopeless position.
Less extreme. 4 pawns in solid line and king vs lone king. How you are going to win that? No hopeless positions after all.

@tneva82
Even though you didn't ask me I'll answer your extreme example question. With 3 queens on the board, stalemate is far from unseen.
Resignation is everyone's own business, it's their right to play to the bitter end. I tend to resign too early. See what @Aighearach and @lp24 said on this topic. They are right.
The habit of some residents to let their time run out is sometimes irritating. I don't normally care for myself, as I open something in a different browser tab and do while waiting for their time to run out. However, I found myself extremely irritated when I was watching other people's games when it was happening.
