Managing to avoid the Zeitnot effect.

How do we enjoy our time playing chess while avoiding being in a position of Zeitnot?

I first advance my defence to have a territorial advantage, like when I aim at a particular square to create a future outpost. Then I tend to try to structure the chessboard with standard common positions. This saves my time for complicated moves. By calculating at least two moves ahead, I am able to determine where the playing field will be. Often players exchange with no gain in material, so I pre-move a safe capture to gain time.

What would you do if you were in time trouble (Zeitnot)?
