It's an extra level of login security. Install the Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator app on a mobile device you use. When you go to the Lichess setup page it will present a QR code, which you scan with your authenticator app to link it with your Lichess account. After that, whenever you log in to Lichess with your username and password, it will also prompt you to enter the 6-digit code which the authenticator app is currently displaying. So even if someone obtains your Lichess username and password, they still can't access your account without the correct authenticator code. The authenticator generates a new code every 30 seconds.
(2FA is a very good idea in general, and you should consider enabling it for any website you use which offers it.)
