lichess ratings are obviously higher - but generally how much? My ratings on this site seem to be about 400 higher than on chess.com, is that typical?

See chessratingcomparisons.com. The typical difference should be around 300, reflecting the difference in initial rating for new players (1500 here vs. 1200 on chess.com).

Different rating systems, different numbers. Comparing them is like comparing apples to bananas, doesn't make much sense.
