Luke McShane was 2700+ at his peak, I don’t know what he is now, but his profession is engineer, he is thus considered the strongest amateur in history.
Kamsky is the only one i can think of in recent times. Thx @ kuso
Oh, I stand corrected then. That's impressive on the part of Bassem.
A model? Is that a real job?
Interesting list.
@Subomega Don't know him. What does he do?
@Kusokosla Interesting
Kuso what kind of engineer? Everyone always uses the term engineer, and bcause of my lack in formal education i cant exactly imagine. Arent there different kind of engineers for different fields? And@ Nayf i don't know myself tbh,but i know he was studying. Wii should know though.
@Subomega yeah you're right. There's a big difference with being a construction engineer and chemical engineer
Kuso he studied philosophy and mathematics and worked at goldman. Its funny in the book why i left goldman, i thought it was bs advertising when the author claimed the guys who worked at goldman were so smart that on the side they can play really strong chess.
I suppose I was hoping Hou Yifan was unique, but I guess not quite so much.... Kramnik once said that if she wanted to be at the top she had to study chess full-time, so I had assumed that's what all the top players do. It would be interesting to see a list of the current top 100 with information on their professions.
Euwe was a mathematician, and I think never primarily made his living playing chess, despite being world champion.
Nezhmetdinov was also a mathematician and was in teh top 100 at times, but never made GM!
But nethmetdinov had a peak Elo of 2455. That's below gm also.
