Is chess a real sport?

I would not call it a sport, for the same reason I don't call tic-tac-toe or shoots and ladders a sport.
From the perspective of motor skills chess is not a sport.
Every sport activity requires the acquisition of some level of motor skills ,muscle memory, hand-brain coordination, etc. One of the fundamental goals of any sport is to gain some sort of muscle skill.

Chess on the other hand is all about the brain and ideally muscle skills should have zero influence on it. The body is an unfortunate distraction that sometimes becomes a factor. But ideally even someone like Stephen Hawking should be able to play chess in all its formats.

It's the competitive and recreational aspect of chess that make it appear among sports. Any recreational activity that can be turned into a well-organized competitive event will have the potential to appear among sport events.
#17 hand-brain coordination, sounds like a physical blitzs game to me ;)

I am sure, if you look in different dictionaries from around the world, the word sport, properly have different meanings. Some languages might have several words, when translated to English all mean sport.

And also meanings of words changes all the time.
There can be an original meaning, but common usage of a word, can increase that word's meaning.

Similar to art... How do you define art?
How would you define what is a sport?
Now, we have sport, like Ice stating and gymnastics, where contestants are judged, not only on their skills, and execution, but also on their performance. (They are judged by professionals, who knows about it, but this is sometimes judged from judge's subjective perspective)

We have also eSports, which have given sport a whole new meaning.
Obviously not - the modern definition of sport states that it has to be some form of physical activity. Chess by no means is physical discipline other than the fact you may burn a lot of calories due to stress in a long chess game.
