I've been playing chess 40 years in really sorry to show my stupidity, but I don't actually know how increment works ? Anyone care to help me understand what it actually is/ means and how it works? Thanks

The amount of time that represents the increment is added to your clock each time after you move, starting from the second move on Lichess.

Hi, there are more types of increment in existence, but as far as I know Lichess adds time automatically regardless of your move time.

Increment reflects how much extra time each player gets after their move. So, if you are playing a 15 + 10 game you start with fifteen minutes on your clock. After every move you get 10 seconds added to your clock. It doesn't matter how fast or slow you move, you get those ten seconds once you've made your move.

This system is very common for online chess and OTB chess

No you start with 15 minutes on the clock. Now don't try to disturb @SOJB, he was asking politely.

@SOJB - In your chess club, do you use analog chess clocks? In my chess tournaments you have to use electronical clocks that can do incremement time. A normal game is 1 h 40 min for the first 40 moves plus 30 seconds for every move. After 40 moves you get another 30 minutes for the rest of the game and stoll 30 seconds increment. The increment is added on your available time whenever you complete your move by hitting th clock.

I didn't think that baron pants was being rude or off and I don't belong to a club there isn't one in my town, played otb at school many many years ago and against family and friends. No tournaments otb though thanks for explaining it to me a bit more though .

Thanks everyone for replies, I now feel better playing games with increment knowing what it means , time added rather than length of time to make a move. Hope I've helped others too that didn't know . Sorry for my naivety ,just didn't know. Have a good day playing chess everyone.
