I got really bad at chess and I was really good once

I hate slow time controls Because it makes me bored.

Agreed. Don’t wear silly pants. Wear SquarePants.. they worked for SpongeBob!

square pants are a better fit for chess cause the board is square and the pieces all stand on squares. So be square and wear some black-and-white checkered square pants.

how's you anxiety level? just an anecdote, but when my anxiety is high, my chess is worse than the usual bad.

In some ways, I feel like becoming proficient at playing chess is a lot like becoming proficient in a second language. I was, at one time, relatively decent at speaking French. But then I didn't need to speak it anymore, and I didn't have the opportunity to speak it anymore, so I lost it. If you don't use it, you lose it.

But also, I think the truly frightening thing about chess is just how pointedly it highlights the impact that even deceptively small variables have on one's cognitive ability. That seems to be the case for me, anyway. If I'm hungry, or I haven't had my morning espresso, or I haven't gotten enough sleep, or if there is something on my mind that is troubling me, I don't play as well, and it's very, very noticeable. I'll miss tactics, blunder pieces, play too fast, miscalculate, etc.

Chess is tough. Some days I feel unstoppable, and other days I feel like I don't understand the game at all.
