Is there a way to make the software teach me book openings?
What are the other ways to use software to improve game skill? thanks!

Yes! There is. You can use fritz opening trainer to practice different openings. Also there are repertoire creators such as Chess Position Trainer where you put your opening prep in them and it flashcard tests you on it. I currently have about 2000 positions in mine and practice for about 20 minutes a day on it. Also it is 10 bucks instead of 80. But I like Fritz too for the opening DB (the live db also!) and the large choice of engines/settings you don't have with other programs.

Thank you. But how do I make all those things work (opening DB)?
I think there is a lot of stuff re Fritz that takes some understanding to use. For example when I want to train, I click on that menu option and it takes me to a browse, presumably to select from a database. All that is what you meant by DB... What I notice about Fritz opening trainer is that DB is available, but I do not know where the DB is located for the other training modules, such as defense training and check training, etc.

chironik, you should be analysing on Fritz all your otb games if you play any, I don't know if you do this. add kibitzer in the game window and choose fritz 11 or fritz 15 then press the + button a few times to get a larger list of moves assessed. Then go through your game and annotate it by hand making reference to turning points in the game where a mistake or a great move alter the computers valuation of the position(the top move-in the kibitz window- is always the best, followed by the next best etc.). a change of <.25 is a dubious move(denoted by ?!) a change of .25 to 1.10 is a mistake(denoted by ?) and >1.10 is a blunder (denoted by ??).
a game will continue along a similar vain before a mistake is made and a blunder will lose the game which would otherwise be drawn unless enough turning points occur. Every dubious move, mistake and blunder you should either with the computer-being careful to always make moves you are likely to find not computer analysis, or with your own assessment, find the best continuation. Your mistakes being the best ones to learn from.

note the game window to open the kibitzer window in is found by clicking on a game in the fritz DB

Training tab and click opening training. Then change it to detailed and click learn moves.
If you want to play the black side of it click change sides.
Here is also some good information on the Fritz 15 openings trainer. Its best to read through it instead of me explaining everything that you will read here anyway.
