I would like to start a game, maybe against a friend, from a custom setup position, say some rook endgame or middlegame position.

Is ist possible so setup an arbitrary position and then start the game from there?

I think this would be useful for improving specific endgame situations.

Set the position up in the board editor (https://lichess.org/editor), then click "continue from here" and "play with a friend".

FWIW, for positions from an actual game, even easier: click the three-lines menu in the game, and select "continue from here".
