How to play classical chess OTB

@MrPushwood said in #5:

Because a lot of online people are no doubt playing in their underwear. Was that really so tough to figure out, OP?
But who does so?
I guess you are one of those doing it!

My two cents (with no tournament experience) - work on physical fitness (even if you are fit currently).

If you keep thinking like this, you wouldn't be able to make it.
If you focus on game (you are playing), then you wouldn't think about time at all.
Classical chess is about patience and composure.
You have enough time on your clock to think properly.
Firstly, playing classical games on real board with someone for practice of how you manage youself accordingly to time format.
Then do preparation of opening set up to play to build foundation of game. Revise them thoroughly.
And don't spend too much time in playing opening on board there. More time is required in middle game to devise strategy.
Stop playing fast chess be it online or not. Do play many games to get feel of playing OTB classical.
Think before you touch piece else you would be forced to move the piece you touched according to touch rule.
When you blunder (realising after playing move) don't get tensed or nervous. Try to act normally and look only at board. Also, try looking at opposite side of board as eye contact factor is used by players while playing against someone to know about position.
Keep yourself hydrated well enough.
Lastly, one requires a cool and fresh mind beforehand. So, get a proper sleep day before tournament.
All the best!

Thanks Akbar

Actually I tried writing in rapid but I forget after playing some certain moves to write

Just take your time and use all of the time available to you! And don’t forget to reset the clock after every move. And do not touch any piece unless you are 100% sure you want to move it!!!!!

Sitting and thinking for 10,15 or 20 minutes can seem like an eternity when you’re new to OTB. You imagine that anyone watching your game can see the right moves to play. It’s quite intimidating. Try and avoid the temptation to just move anything.

Otb is nothing like playing online.

Just try and relax and do your best! Good luck.

My club encourages classical time, with clocks. But all the games finish in 1/4 the time allotted. Makes me feel guilty if I use my time. Also means I'd get to play fewer people. But they still send the games to FIDE and USCF as classical, and brag that they are classical, and refuse to play rapid.

I can say that classical chess is like running. You need practice setting a pace, so you don't think too long or too shortly on any moves.
