As well as the material above, this is my advice and how I personally improved(up to about 2000):
The biggest thing in Atomic is analyzing past mistakes and learning new lines. It is very easy to self-improve. I recommend watching pro(>2000) play and seeing what kind of moves and lines they play. I personally developed an intuitional sense for moves and when to play them, and that put me from 1700(could be of help to lower-rated players too!) to 1900.
P.S By watching pro play I mean time controls ≥ 3+0. There are many players who play time controls like 1+0 and even 1/2+0. That is alright, but watching these games is usually not beneficial.
Also, when you see a line you keep losing to, try to analyze it quite deeply, maybe 5 moves ahead. If you see someone use an opening trap on you and you fall for it, add it to your repertoire and chances are this will increase your rating by a lot, especially at a lower rating.
