How to get good at chess

I have never really been that good at puzzles. I slack off on them a lot. Like I'll do 20 or so one day and not touch them again for a year. Been like that for decades for me. Most of my tactical training comes from analysis of my own games and analysis of pgns that are not my games. To me it's more logical and more fun.

The key is play at least 5 classical games a week and analyse them with out engines as much as you possibly can. GM Jesse Kraai called it "exhaust bio analysis before Silicon analysis." You would be surprised how helpful it is to do that.

  1. Focus on playing rapid+classical.Take your time with each move (check if pieces are hanging, potential threats from opponent’s pieces)
  2. Solve tactics- https://blitztactics.com/ https://chesstempo.com/
3.Check out IM Andras Toth’s youtube channel (chesscoachandras). It has great content (amateur’s mind series, know thy classics)
His games against lower rated opponents are pretty instructive too!
4.Don’t waste too much time on learning openings.Choose one and stick to it.( e.g the Italian) or just follow general opening principles (control the center, develop knights before bishops, don’t move a piece twice in the opening)
Play e5 against e4 and d5 against d4 as it would lead to pretty symmetrical positions.

Your rapid rating has gone up quite a lot since June so you are making good progress. Have patience, you will get better.

From 1500 it might be tough to get higher. It all depends on an individual, and there are no universal solutions, maybe except from upgrade your brain.
